Own Canadian

Moneris is being sold.Halifax is inside the area RKP actually serves.

RBC and BMO are selling Moneris in full to Francisco Partners, a San Francisco private-equity firm. Moneris keeps its head office, its infrastructure and its people in Canada; what leaves is the ownership. Halifax is the largest merchant market in Atlantic Canada, and RKP Atlantic is a Canadian-owned supplier with an office a few hours up the road.

Ownership, not pricing. Rates depend on your statement, not on a web page.

The Halifax part of your statement

Interchange on a card issued outside Canada costs more to accept than a domestic one. A downtown or waterfront merchant in Halifax sees far more of those between May and October than a suburban plaza does, because the cruise season and the summer visitor trade put foreign-issued cards through the same terminal that runs local debit in February.

That mix is the single thing most likely to make your effective rate look nothing like the rate you were quoted. It is also the thing a one-page rate sheet cannot tell you. If you compare processors in Halifax, compare them on your own summer months, not on a headline percentage.

Who you would be dealing with

RKP Atlantic Business Services is 100% Canadian-owned — 687441 NB Inc., in business since 2016, BBB A+ accredited — and is an ISO supplying Nuvei merchant accounts and Nuvei-certified PAX terminals to merchants across Canada.

Be clear-eyed about the geography: RKP is in Grand-Barachois, New Brunswick. Halifax is a drive, not a walk. What you get is a regional Atlantic supplier where the owners answer the phone seven days a week, rather than a queue in a national call centre. If same-day on-site attendance is a hard requirement for your business, ask about it before you sign.

Who is Canadian-owned once the sale closes

Nuvei is Montréal-founded and still run from Montréal by its founder, Philip Fayer. It was taken private in November 2024 in a deal led by Advent International of Boston — worth saying plainly — but Fayer at roughly 24%, Novacap at roughly 18% and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec at roughly 12% hold about 54% between them. Moneris, after closing, is wholly owned by a single American firm with no Canadian ownership remaining.

Honest caveat: no rates appear on this page, on purpose. RKP Atlantic also supplies Elavon and Fiserv's Clover, both American-owned; Nuvei is the Canadian-majority one, so name it when you ask. And ask what on-site attendance looks like for your address before you sign — that is a different question from who can supply you, and it is the one a rate sheet never answers.
