Who is still Canadian-owned

RBC and BMO are selling Moneris in full to Francisco Partners, a private-equity firm headquartered in San Francisco, for about C$2.0 billion. Moneris stays resident in Canada — head office, infrastructure, people. The ownership does not. For once the story is not happening somewhere else: this is a Toronto company changing hands.

Moneris has been jointly owned by RBC and BMO since 2000 and is run from a Toronto head office. Both banks are now selling out completely, and the buyer is in California. After closing, both keep referring customers to Moneris under long-term referral agreements, and Jeff Sloan, the former chief executive of Global Payments, becomes chairman of the board.
Moneris says its head office and technology infrastructure stay fully resident in Canada, with nearly 2,000 people across the country, and that its commitment to Canadian businesses is unchanged. On day-to-day operations, take them at their word. What changed sits upstream of all of it: two Canadian banks are off the cap table and one American firm owns the whole thing.
Private-equity owners typically hold a business three to seven years and run it toward a sale. Pricing, product and support decisions get made against that clock. That is the model, not a prediction about anyone in particular.
The sale is expected to close by the end of RBC and BMO's first fiscal quarter of 2027, subject to approval under the Retail Payment Activities Act and clearance under the Competition Act. Nothing about your account changes the day it closes. If you are month-to-month, it is simply a sensible moment to know what you are actually paying.
Nuvei was founded in Montréal in 2003 by Philip Fayer, who still runs it as chair and chief executive from Montréal. It was taken private in November 2024 in a deal led by Advent International of Boston — you should hear that here rather than find it later — but its Canadian shareholders hold a majority: Fayer at roughly 24%, Novacap at roughly 18% and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec at roughly 12%, about 54% between them. Moneris after closing has no Canadian ownership remaining at all.
RKP Atlantic Business Services, which publishes this page, is 100% Canadian-owned — 687441 NB Inc., in business since 2016 — and supplies Nuvei merchant accounts to merchants across Canada.
Send your most recent Moneris statement and RKP will go through it line by line and show you what you pay now against what you would pay with them. No charge, no obligation, and there is a secure upload for it rather than an email attachment. That part works the same from Toronto as from anywhere else, because reading a statement does not require anyone to be standing in your shop.
The part that does depend on where you are is hardware and attendance. RKP's office is in New Brunswick, so ask what installation, replacement turnaround and on-site attendance look like at a Toronto address, and get the answer before you sign anything. Ask the same question of whoever else you are comparing.
Honest caveat: this page does not claim a Toronto presence, and no rates appear on it, because a rate quoted without your statement is a guess. RKP Atlantic also supplies Elavon and Fiserv's Clover, and both are American-owned — Nuvei is the Canadian-majority one, so ask for it by name. Hardware logistics and on-site attendance in Toronto are a question to put to them directly, not something this page answers for you.
